Elgin Council names Guevara as Vice Mayor

ELGIN — The Elgin City Council appointed Councilman Fred Guevara as the council’s new vice mayor on Tuesday. The council voted unanimously to name Guevara to the position, said City Clerk/Treasurer Machelle Reynolds.

Carl Ray Lewis II, a veteran newspaperman who was executive editor of the Southwest Ledger and the Southwest Chronicle, died in his sleep at his home here on March 6. He was 52. In 2010 Lewis enrolled at Murray State College at Tishomingo, where he studied behavioral scienc-es.

Elgin High School classes host fundraiser for hunger relief

The Elgin High School art and family and consumer science classes hosted the 13th annual Empty Bowls Dinner event Thursday at the school cafeteria. ‘Empty Bowls’ is a reminder of the many people who go to bed hungry because their bowls are empty.

Owls split regional games, advance to Area

BETHANY — Elgin’s Jaylon Nettles scored the winning basket, and the Owls withstood a last-second rush from Bethany to post a dramatic 51-49 win to ensure themselves a spot in the Area Tournament this week. However, the Owls suffered a 61-48 loss to Oklahoma Christian School the following night.

Lady Owls advance to Area tourney with wins over Cushing, McGuinness

BETHANY — Elgin won two do-or-die games in a row at the regional tourney to advance to this week’s Area Tournament in Hennessey. After losing 69-42 to No. 3 Bethany in the first round last week, the Lady Owls rebounded with wins over Cushing and McGuinness.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Elgin wrestlers Symphony Veloz and Ritson Meyer were favored to win, and they did. Veloz, a junior, and Meyer, a freshman, were crowned state champions and the Owl mat team finished third in the Class 5A state meet held last week at Jim Norick Arena.

Elgin swimmers compete in 5A meet; girls team awarded academic honor

ELGIN — Elgin’s swim teams ended their season on a high note by competing in the Class 5A State Meet and earning points in the finals of four events. Junior Ellie Stevenson finished 15th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:03.

Owls cruise to district title, 50-29

NORMAN — Elgin used a dominating third-quarter performance to build a 23-point lead over Community Christian School and cruise to a Class 4A district championship win Friday night. The Owls held a 38-15 lead at halftime en route to their 50-29 victory.

NORMAN — Freshman Kelby Carter scored five of Elgin’s final seven points in the last 34 seconds to propel the Lady Owls to a 46-37 win and a Class 4A district championship over Community Christian last Friday.

Elgin crowned 5A West mat champs

MIDWEST CITY — Elgin crowned three individual champions and claimed the team trophy at the Class 5A West Regional wrestling tournament last Saturday at Carl Albert High School. Hunter Jackson won first at 113 pounds, followed by Dominick Benndetto at 144 and Ritson Meyer at 190 pounds.
