Elgin swimmers compete in 5A meet; girls team awarded academic honor

ELGIN — Elgin’s swim teams ended their season on a high note by competing in the Class 5A State Meet and earning points in the finals of four events.

Junior Ellie Stevenson finished 15th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:03.25 and then ended the 200-yard individual medley in 11th place with a time of 2:40.02.

Meanwhile, the Elgin foursome of Mason Thompson, Jayden Molina, Hunter Monostori and Noah Bronkema Jr. finished the 200-yard freestyle relay in eighth place with a time of 1:44.12 while earning 22 points for the Owls.

Meanwhile, the 200-yard medley relay team of Logan Squyres, Zekke Anderson, Murdoc Bradley and John Clipp Jr. finished in 13th with a time of 2:09.72.

The boys team earned 30 points for the state meet, while the girls squad accumulated eight points.

“It was a good swim meet,” Elgin head coach Corey Grochow said. “All in all, we ended the season good.”

In addition, the girls team was presented with the Class 5A Academic All-State trophy with a 3.8 grade point average.
