Elgin High School classes host fundraiser for hunger relief

The Elgin High School art and family and consumer science classes hosted the 13th annual Empty Bowls Dinner event Thursday at the school cafeteria.

‘Empty Bowls’ is a reminder of the many people who go to bed hungry because their bowls are empty.  

EHS students created handmade clay bowls for the event. Patrons were invited to purchase a handcrafted bowl for $10 and receive a free meal of soup, beans, cornbread and dessert.

Shelley’s Deli, Ann’s Country Kitchen, China Garden, Hacienda Las Margaritas, Boompa’s, the EHS FCCLA Club, the EHS FFA Mother’s Club and several individuals  provided soup for the dinner, which included a pot of beans. The Old Plantation in Medicine Park donated yeast rolls. 

Organizers thanked Williams Foods for donating a ham to flavor the beans and McDonald’s for donating pats of butter.

The event included a silent auction table, with items from local businesses. Organizers expressed gratitude to Anita West and Melissa Evon for their work on the silent auction.

Funds from this year’s event will go to the Elgin Community Food Pantry, Lawton Food Bank and Feed the Children.

The Empty Bowls Project is an international effort to fight hunger. The basic idea is simple: Participants create ceramic bowls, then serve a simple meal. 

Guests choose a bowl to use that day and keep it as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.
