Voter registration deadline approaching

July 29 is the last day to apply for voter registration to be eligible to vote in these elections: Aug. 23 primary runoff. City of Lawton Wards 3 and 4. Central High School District. The town of Medicine Park.

Saving lives through Comanche County Boots and Badges

LAWTON – Comanche County’s firefighters, law enforcement officers, and local officials recently joined forces to help save lives across southwest Oklahoma and parts of north Texas.

Chamber moves forward with first family fall festival

ELGIN – Carnival games, food, a petting zoo and costume contests will be part of the first Family Fall Fest set for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. The inaugural event, hosted by the Elgin Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by numerous businesses, will be held at the Elgin baseball field.

Elgin approves new ward map

ELGIN – Elgin has updated its voting wards to reflect shifts in the city’s population. In a special meeting Monday, Elgin City Council approved a map containing the new voting wards.

Cyril Saddles up to host its annual rodeo this weekend

CYRIL – Bull riders, bronc busters and calf ropers will compete in one of Oklahoma’s longest-running rodeos when the 57th annual Cyril Open begins July 22. Rusty Snider, president of the Cyril Roundup Club, said action will start at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Cyril Rodeo grounds, 700 W.

Lawton Speedway remembers fallen racer Rob Bland

LAWTON ­– Cyril’s Rob Bland was a racer by every definition of the word. He raced the No. 16 Limited Modified at Lawton Speedway and many other tracks around south Oklahoma and north Texas. Bland was known for his kindness, willingness to help other racers, and his contagious laughter.

Meet Maribell   Maribell is seeking a comfortable home where she can spend her golden years. This older female is a calm, medium-sized, mixed breed brindle canine. She enjoys quietly lounging in the air-conditioned kennel area, keeps her space clean and seems to be housebroken.

School districts predict increased enrollment

ELGIN – Elgin Public Schools will likely experience an increase in enrollment as new military families move into the district, Superintendent Nathaniel Meraz said. “Right now, we are full and at capacity, but that doesn’t matter. Military families can choose where they want to go,” he said.
