Holy City mural returns to southwest Oklahoma; grand reopening of museum expected

HOLY CITY OF THE WICHITAS – A restored rendering has returned to the Holy City of the Wichitas. “A new wonder and national treasure of southwest Oklahoma is now back home,” said Ron Jarvis, a member of the Holy City Board of Directors.

Co-owner of petting zoo to be arraigned Aug. 29

LAWTON – The co-owner of a petting zoo for children appeared in Comanche County District Court for a preliminary hearing Aug. 19 on a felony charge of obtaining property/money by false pretenses, and his arraignment is set for Aug. 29.

LAWTON – Southwest Oklahoma District 3 District Attorney David Thomas confirmed that he has received an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation report which focuses on Comanche County District 3 Commissioner Alvin Cargill.

O’Brien wins seat on Comanche County Commission 

LAWTON – Elgin resident John O’Brien pulled off an upset in Tuesday’s GOP primary election, defeating longtime Comanche County Commissioner Gail Turner in the race for the District 1 seat on the commission. O’Brien edged past Turner, capturing 1,116 votes or 51.64% of the total.

Fletcher Free Fair kicks off Sept. 1

FLETCHER – Fletcher’s annual Free Fair will feature beef, goat, sheep and swine shows combined with a Sept. 2 parade and live entertainment. The purpose of the event, which began around 1952, has been to raise money for the junior and senior classes at Fletcher High School.

County extends burn ban for 14 days

LAWTON – Despite the weekend rain, Comanche County’s burn ban will remain in place for at least two more weeks. The Comanche County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to extend the ban on outdoor burning for 14 days. The commission will revisit the issue at the Sept. 6 meeting.

LAWTON – Declaring a winner of the Ward 4 race for the Lawton City Council would be premature in light of the death of candidate Barbara Curry, city officials said Wednesday.
