Statewide drought conditions remain unchanged

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.01 of an inch for the week of Sept. 12-18, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The Sept. 13 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 100% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, unchanged from the previous week. Additionally, 97% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought category, unchanged from the previous week.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the upper 70s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly short to very short.

Here’s a look at crops’ status for the week:

Small grains: Winter wheat planted reached 13%, down one point from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Row crops: Corn dented reached 89%, down four points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Corn mature reached 54%, down 11 points from the previous year and six points from normal. Corn harvested reached 30%, up 12 points from normal.

Sorghum coloring reached 85%, up one point from the previous year and five points from normal. Sorghum mature reached 35%, up one point from the previous year but down four points from normal. Sorghum harvested reached 7%, down three points from normal.

Soybeans setting pods reached 81%, down one point from the previous year but up two points from normal.

In the south-central districts, reporters indicated that dryland soybeans are dropping leaves due to low moisture and high heat. Statewide, soybeans dropping leaves reached 23%, up one point from the previous year and six points from normal.

Peanuts mature reached 50%, up nine points from the previous year and 15 points from normal.

Cotton bolls opening reached 56%, up four points from the previous year and eight points from normal.

Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 65%, down five points from the previous year and 11 points from normal. The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 8%.

The third cutting of other hay reached 62%, up 25 points from the previous year and 28 points from normal.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 69% poor to very poor. Livestock condition was rated at 76% fair to good.
