Families who need to buy back-to-school items but are trying to curb their spending can save a few dollars this weekend.

Oklahoma’s annual sales tax holiday, which gives shoppers a chance to stock up on essentials, began at midnight today and runs through midnight Sunday, according to the Oklahoma Tax Commission. During the holiday, shoppers may buy clothing and shoes that sell for less than $100 without paying sales tax on those items.

The sales tax exemption does not apply to accessories, such as jewelry, handbags or purses. Special clothing or shoes primarily designed for athletic activities or protective use are still taxable, and so are rented clothes and shoes.

If a customer puts an eligible item on layaway during the tax-free weekend, the exemption will apply when the customer makes the final payment on the item and claims it, according to the Tax Commission. Customers who buy and pay for eligible items online this weekend will qualify for the exemption if the retailer accepts the order for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period ends.

If someone buys an eligible item during the sales tax holiday using a previously issued rain check, the item will qualify for the exemption. However, if a rain check issued during the tax-free weekend is redeemed after the weekend is over, the item will not be tax exempt.

If a retailer offers a discount that drops the price of an eligible item below $100, that item will qualify for an exemption, according to the Tax Commission. This rule applies to all discounts, even if a retailer’s coupon or loyalty card is required to receive the discount.
