Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.83 of an inch for the week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The Aug. 30 US Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 100% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, unchanged from the previous week. Additionally, 99% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought category, unchanged from the previous week.
Statewide temperatures averaged in the upper 70s. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly short to adequate, while subsoil moisture conditions were rated short to very short.
Here’s a look at how crops performed for the week:
Small grains: In the southeast district, reporters indicated that winter wheat planting is starting. Statewide, winter wheat planted reached 5%.
Row crops: In the south-central district, reporters indicated that all corn and sorghum that did not make it through the drought has been cut for hay.
Corn dough reached 90%, unchanged from the previous year but down one point from normal. Corn dented reached 73%, up eight points from the previous year and six points from normal. Corn mature reached 29%.
Sorghum headed reached 91%, down one point from the previous year and two points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 60%, up three points from the previous year and normal. Sorghum mature reached 15%, up two points from the previous year but down four points from normal.
Soybeans blooming reached 87%, down two points from the previous year and one point from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 63%, down three points from the previous year and normal. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 5%, up one point from the previous year and normal.
Peanuts mature reached 30%, up five points from the previous year and 13 points from normal.
Cotton setting bolls reached 95%, up seven points from the previous year and two points from normal. Cotton bolls opening reached 18%, up four points from the previous year but down two points from normal.
Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 41%, down five points from the previous year and 17 points from normal.
The second cutting of other hay reached 95%, up 19 points from the previous year and 20 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 41%, up 24 points from the previous year and 21 points from normal.
Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 67% poor to very poor. Livestock condition was rated at 80% fair to good.
