ELGIN – Runners wishing to participate in the Marine Corps League’s 29th annual Devil Dog Run should preregister for the event, said organizer David Hull.

The event attracts hundreds of runners and spectators from across the region, Devil Dog Run’s website states. The event is open to the public.

Several runners have registered with many more are expected to register the day of the event, Hull added.

In collaboration with United States Marine Corps League Boomer Detachment 1288, U.S. Marine Corps Military Detachment on Fort Sill, and the City of Elgin, the event features a one mile walk as well as 5k and 10k runs. The walk is free; 5k and 10k are $30 apiece. T-shirts are given to those who participate in the 5k and 10k runs.

“The run is a way of helping active duty as well as retired Marines and Marine veterans,” said Hull, who serves as the Commandant for Boomer Attachment 1288. In addition to providing scholarships, the event helps garner support the Boy Scouts of America as well as Gold Star Families. “We also hold Marine Corps birthday celebrations and help veterans in assisted living celebrate Christmas at Christmastime,” Hull said.

Previously held on Fort Sill, the Devil Dog Run was relocated to Elgin’s Youth Sports Complex in 2021 which was a “huge success,” said Hull.

Sponsorships are still available, however the deadline for logos to be printed on t-shirts has passed. There will be banner listing all sponsorships entered by Tuesday, Sept. 27, Hull said. Sponsorship tiers are as follows: platinum $1,000; gold $750; silver $500; and bronze for $250.

“We have approximately 15 sponsors,” Hull said. “Williams Foods has donated fruit, and the USO has pledged to donate water.”

On behalf of the Marine Corps League, Hull expressed appreciation of those who support the event.

“We want to thank all the sponsors, volunteers as well as the runners, who help us achieve our goals,” he said.

Registration at the day of the race will take place from 6 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

Starting time for the 10k is 8:15 a.m.; the 5k, 8:30 a.m.; and the one mile walk at 8:45 a.m.
