Elgin swims to victory in five-team meet

LAWTON — Elgin’s girls’ team swam to victory last week in a five-team meet with key wins in two relay events that pushed them over the top. The Lady Owls won the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay with a two-second victory in the 400 over Lawton Eisenhower.

Carolina chickadee

The Carolina chickadee is a fairly common bird and is easily attracted to backyard feeders. Since I featured the tufted titmouse last week, I thought it best to feature the bird which is often seen along with it.

Piedmont drops Owls in consolation title matchup

WEATHERFORD — Highly ranked Piedmont rolled past Elgin 72-49 in the consolation championship game of the Weatherford Classic last Saturday. The Owls struggled from the beginning as the Wildcats hit four three-pointers in the first quarter and never relented, taking an 18-7 lead after one quarter.

Sweet Sandi with an “i”

This beautiful, fluffy, large mixed-breed adult dog with a gentle personality is Sandi. She is house-trained, loves puppies, taking long walks and cuddling with people of all ages. She does well with male dogs, but needs a cat-free home.  Sandi will be spayed and vaccinated prior to adoption.

LAWTON — Comanche County’s judicial staff is back up to full strength after two new judges were sworn in Monday.

ELGIN ANIMAL SHELTER FEATURED PETS

Two solid black males (Doodle and Leo), one solid black female (Olive), and a gray female tabby (Pansy), are Elgin Animal Shelter’s Pets of the Week. All four kittens are about three months old and appear to be kid-, dog-, and cat-friendly.

County chooses new chairman, vice chairman

LAWTON — The Comanche County Board of Commissioners started the new year Tuesday by electing its chairman and vice chairman. The commission chose senior commissioner Johnny Owens as the chairman and newcomer Josh Powers as the vice chairman for 2023.

LAWTON — Two new Comanche County commissioners were sworn into office in a short ceremony Dec. 30 at the Comanche County Courthouse. District Judge Grant Sheperd administered the oath of office to commissioners John O’Brien and Josh Powers in the jury room on the second floor of the courthouse.

‘Our crowd continues to grow’

LAWTON — The COVID-19 pandemic upended many industries, including the film industry. Movie theaters closed their doors temporarily, and new releases were postponed due to COVID-related production delays. And even when theaters reopened, some audiences were slow to return.

This week’s featured creature is a most peculiar bird. It is abundant, and you’ve almost certainly seen it at busy department store parking lots. In fact, where people go, so goes the great-tailed grackle.
