Elgin OKs new voting wards

ELGIN – Elgin City Council authorized the city on Tuesday to publish a legal notice concerning changes to the city’s voting ward boundaries.

The new wards are as follows:

  • Ward 1: The area within the city limits bounded by Rock Bridge Estates Addition, Apple Creek Estates Addition, Bridgetown Estates Addition, Bridge Town South Addition and Twin Creek Addition Lots 1-3 and 11-12 (City Park).
  • Ward 2: The area beginning at the intersection of First and D streets and continuing east to the intersection of First Street and Keeney Road. The ward continues north to the north boundary of K-Lowe Addition and north to the north boundary of K-Lowe Addition, then north to Fourth and K streets, west to F Street, north to State Highway 17, west to D Street and south to the starting point.
  • Ward 3: The area bounded by Country Aire Estates and unplatted parcels in the north half of Section 24, T4N, R 11W and in the northwest quarter of Section 19, T4N, R10W; the west half of the northeast quarter and of the southeast quarter of Section 23, T Legacy Estates; Elgin Medical Plaza Addition Phase 1, Block 1, Lot 1; Kingsman Apartment Homes Addition and other unplatted tracts in the south half of Section 25.
  • Ward 4: The area bounded by Kolker Estates Addition and other unplatted tracts in the southeast quarter of Section 30; Shadow Ridge Addition; Willow Creek Estates Addition; Smallwood Acres Addition; and Elgin Memorial Cemetery. Beginning at the intersection of Fourth and F streets and heading north to State Highway 17, then east to Keeney Road and south to the north boundary of K-Lowe Addition, then west to K Street, north to Fourth and K and west to the beginning point.

Residents can weigh in on the new ward map during the council’s next meeting, set for 6 p.m. July 18 at Elgin City Hall. The council will consider an ordinance adopting the map at the same meeting.

In other business, the council raised council members’ compensation from $75 a month to $225 a month, an increase of $150.

The change will not take effect until the current members’ terms are completed.

Acting as the Elgin Public Works Authority, the council approved the authority’s $2.15 million budget proposal for fiscal year 2023.

The authority is expected to generate $2.15 million in revenue in the coming fiscal year but spend about $2.22 million, leaving a gap of about $74,740. The authority will tap reserve funds to offset the shortfall.
