LAWTON — Elgin sprinter Shun Deener has signed a letter of intent to run for the Cameron University Aggie track team next year.

Deener signed his commitment papers last month during a ceremony at Cameron.

Deener was part of the 4x100 relay team last year that placed at the Class 5A state track meet. He also runs in the 100-meter and 200-meter races.

“He has a good work ethic and will enjoy being at Cameron,” Elgin track coach Jon Hughes said.

Cameron’s graduate assistant, Toby Kirk, said Deener will be an asset to the team’s 4x100 relay and will also compete in the open 100 and open 200 meter races.

Cameron is trying to improve its sprint team, which is one of the reasons the Aggies recruited Deener.

“We’ve been a distance-focused team, and we’re trying to bring in kids who can grow the sprints. We need kids like him to run the 100 for us,” Kirk said. “He’s got a solid time and he’s a local kid, and we’re trying to develop a cultural foundation around Cameron that attracts more of our kids from Lawton and the surrounding areas.”

The Cameron coaching staff also was impressed with Deener’s attitude and personality and “how much he’s willing to grind it out. He told us he’ll do everything he can for the team.”

Deener will spend his last high school track season as part of the 4x100 relay team, which will include Treyvon Crabtree, Matt Lund and Tre Harris. He will likely compete in the 100- and 200-meter races again this season.

The track season starts March 23 at the Cache Bulldog Invitational at Cache High School. The Elgin Owl Classic will be held a week later on March 31.
