ELGIN — Owl head football coach Chalmer Wyatt has been selected as Region 4 Coach of the Year for the 2022 season.

Wyatt led Elgin to an 8-3 record and a spot in the playoffs for the first time in five years.

“It’s pretty cool,” Wyatt said of the award. “It’s really neat. It just shows the good year we had and the improvement we had. We put a lot of work in and tried to be consistent with everything we did.”

There are eight regions in Oklahoma, and each award winner will be honored at the Oklahoma All-State game this summer.

This is Chalmer’s first major award as a head coach, which he said is a good feeling.

“We work hard to see the benefit of all that, and it’s nice to get rewarded,” he said.

The football program was also honored earlier this year when Elgin defensive coordinator Jack Baker was named as an All-State coach and several players received post-season honors, including cornerback Toby Parker, who was selected as an All-Stater on the West squad. In addition, lineman Clay Underhill was named a Class 5A All-Star for the Class 5A West team.

As the Region 4 Coach of the Year, Wyatt will now be considered for the Oklahoma Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year honor.

Elgin put together six consecutive wins before losing to Noble. The Owls won a thriller against Lawton MacArthur to seal a spot in the playoffs. However, Elgin lost its last regular-season game to Midwest City and then was shut out by Guthrie in the first round of the playoffs.

The 2022 season was Elgin’s first in Class 5A.
