ELGIN – Oceans of Possibilities is the theme of this year’s summer reading program at Elgin Community Library, but the library is offering a lot more this summer.

The summer reading program comes to the Elgin Community Library through the Oklahoma Department of Libraries via a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, said Leslie Durham, library director.

“Starting June 1, each Tuesday at 1 p.m., the summer reading program – geared more for elementary-age children – will have Mad Science and Unchartered Waters. We’ll also have a program hosted by internationally renowned illustrator, caricaturist and cartoonist Danny Gordon, who’ll teach kids how to draw cartoon ocean animals. He’ll be here from 1 to 2 on June 14,” said Durham.

Oceans of Possibilities runs through the month of June at the library and includes Wednesday Wigglers, Teen Café and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).

Wednesday Wigglers, Teen Café and STEAM will each meet at their regularly scheduled times.

KIDS YOGA

There are many physical, mental and spiritual benefits to the ancient Indian art of yoga, experts agree. Last year’s first kid yoga class helped many patrons understand those benefits, said Durham.

“We offered it last year and it was such a success that the instructor, Stephanie Goldman, asked if she could teach the class again,” the library director said. “We love having community partners help round out our programs.”

Starting June 10, kids yoga will be held from 9-9:45 a.m. each Friday through June at the library.

WATER AEROBICS

A three-week-long water aerobics class will begin at 9 a.m., Tuesday, May 31.

The class will be held from 9-10 a.m. every Tuesday and Friday at the Sterling pool.

Durham said last year people really enjoyed the class. “We were hoping to have the class extend further into the summer,” she said. However, finding a second instructor to teach the class has been unsuccessful. Anyone looking to instruct the class should contact the library.
