Five Owls named to Oklahoman All-State gridiron team

ELGIN — Five Elgin varsity football players were named honorable mention to The Oklahoman newspaper’s All-State team. The “deserving” players were running back Matt Lund, linemen Keith Ferguson and Jace Williams and linebackers Colyn Donnelly and Ritson Meyer. All five will return to the 2023 team.

WEATHERFORD — Elgin’s Lady Owls overcame an early deficit against McGuinness to capture the consolation championship trophy at the Weatherford Classic last Saturday. Elgin, behind by five points at halftime, ultimately finished with a 51-39 win.

WEATHERFORD — A tied game quickly turned into a runaway for Elgin as the Owls outscored Lawton Ike 16-3 in the third quarter and advanced to the consolation championship in the Weatherford Classic. Friday’s 44-31 win improved Elgin’s record to 5-4 as the Owls are set to play Piedmont at 2:30 p.m.

FLETCHER — Christmas break didn’t impact the Sterling Lady Tigers as they returned to the hardwood and posted a convincing 57-16 win over archrival Fletcher Tuesday night. Sterling was led by senior Emma Nunley who finished with 24 points including four three-point buckets.

Tigers hope for confidence boost when action resumes

STERLING — Coach Trent Parrish is hoping the start of January’s basketball schedule will bring a much-needed dose of confidence to Sterling’s boys’ team. After starting the season 6-2, the Tigers have lost four in a row, including a 66-65 nailbiter to Frederick in an early-season tournament.
