Finally! Tigers win close one against Alex

STERLING – A layup by senior Hayden Taliaferro with 16 seconds left propelled the Sterling Tigers to a 64-62 win over Alex last Friday. The two-point win was the first time this season Sterling has won a game decided by three points or fewer.

Elgin swims to victory in five-team meet

LAWTON — Elgin’s girls’ team swam to victory last week in a five-team meet with key wins in two relay events that pushed them over the top. The Lady Owls won the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay with a two-second victory in the 400 over Lawton Eisenhower.

Elgin strings together wins against Elk City, Clinton

ELGIN — For the first time this season Elgin put together consecutive wins with victories over Western Conference opponents Elk City and Clinton. Elgin, 7-6, defeated Elk City 58-48 on Jan. 13 and came back four days later to down Clinton 56-25.

Lady Owls dominate Clinton 60-30

ELGIN – Elgin’s Lady Owls dominated Clinton Tuesday night while earning a 60-30 win over their Western Conference opponent. The Lady Owls jumped out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter and improved that advantage to 36-27 at halftime.

ELGIN — Poor three-point and free throw shooting cost the Elgin Tuesday night as the No. 8-ranked Anadarko Warriors squeezed past the Lady Owls 37-34. “It was a great game. We played well but we didn’t shoot well,” Elgin head coach Brett Sanders said.

Sterling sweeps past Ninnekah 71-49

NINNEKAH — Sterling posted a commanding 71-49 win over Ninnekah Tuesday night as senior Nate Anderson poured through 24 points to lead the way. The win improved Sterling’s season record to 10-7. Sterling took a 14-7 first quarter lead and extended the advantage to 35-16 at halftime.

Jackson wins mat title, Owls finish third as team

ELGIN — Elgin’s Hunter Jackson defeated one of the state’s top wrestlers last Saturday as he won the 113-pound title at the Cushing Invitational. Jackson also has won tournament titles at Blanchard and Weatherford. He defeated Louden Wolfe 3-0 in the finals of the Cushing tournament.

Piedmont drops Owls in consolation title matchup

WEATHERFORD — Highly ranked Piedmont rolled past Elgin 72-49 in the consolation championship game of the Weatherford Classic last Saturday. The Owls struggled from the beginning as the Wildcats hit four three-pointers in the first quarter and never relented, taking an 18-7 lead after one quarter.

Lady Tigers capture third at Black Diamond tourney

RUSH SPRINGS — After a heartbreaking semifinal loss to Rush Springs in the Black Diamond Tournament, Sterling’s Lady Tigers bounced back with a 56-47 win over Empire to claim third place last Saturday.
