Owl mascot returns from Citrus Bowl with great memories

ELGIN — Elgin mascot Ben Roberts hopes to turn his time in the Owl costume into a college education at a major university, and his performance at this year’s Citrus Bowl is helping him get there. Roberts has received offers from three Division I schools, but he’d rather not disclose which ones yet.

Playoffs give Tigers new opportunity; girls enter district tourney with bye

STERLING — The Tigers ended their season on a two-game skid, but they still have hopes when the Class A District Tournament begins Friday at Velma-Alma. Sterling (15-9) lost consecutive games to Cyril (69-29) and Binger-Oney (49-32).

16 Elgin swimmers qualify for Class 5A state meet

EDMOND — Sixteen Elgin swimmers qualified for the Class 5A State Swim Meet, more than any other year in recent history, head coach Corey Grochow said. “It went really, really well,” Grochow said of the team’s performance at last week’s 5A West Regional.

ELGIN — Owl head football coach Chalmer Wyatt has been selected as Region 4 Coach of the Year for the 2022 season. Wyatt led Elgin to an 8-3 record and a spot in the playoffs for the first time in five years. “It’s pretty cool,” Wyatt said of the award. “It’s really neat.

Elgin wrestlers healthy, ready for State Dual meet

ELGIN — Elgin’s varsity wrestlers are healthy and ready for action today, when they take on Pryor in the first round of the Class 5A Dual State Tournament in Enid. “We’ve been training well, and we’re just anxious to get there,” head coach Cody Rowell said.

No. 1 Elgin wrestlers seek title at dual state

ELGIN — Top-ranked Elgin will travel to Enid on Friday to start its quest for a state dual wrestling championship. Elgin is Class 5A’s No. 1 team in dual action, with nemesis El Reno right behind at No. 2.

Elgin swimmers aim to qualify for 5A state meet

ELGIN — After finishing in the top five at the Suburban Conference swim meet, the Elgin teams will head to regional action Saturday in hopes of qualifying several individuals for the state meet in two weeks. The regional meet will be held at Mitch Park YMCA in Edmond.

Lady Tigers shut down Rush Springs, 46-29

STERLING — Sterling’s defense rose to the occasion last Friday when the Lady Tigers blocked 25 shots, including 20 by post player Kinley Mansel, as the host team shut down Rush Springs 46-29.
