Veloz looking forward to coming wrestling season

ELGIN – Symphony Veloz is anxious to get started with the Elgin Lady Owls’ wrestling season this year after placing sixth at the 16U National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. Veloz, wresting at 180 pounds, won her first two matches but dropped the next three at Nationals.

Elgin girls XC readies for season with returning All-Stater

ELGIN – Longtime Elgin girls’ cross-country coach Tomi Lorah has a young squad, but one that will prepare “very hard” for the upcoming season. The Lady Owls are led by returning All-Stater Audrey McElhaney who placed seventh at the Class 5A state meet last year.

Cyril Saddles up to host its annual rodeo this weekend

CYRIL – Bull riders, bronc busters and calf ropers will compete in one of Oklahoma’s longest-running rodeos when the 57th annual Cyril Open begins July 22. Rusty Snider, president of the Cyril Roundup Club, said action will start at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Cyril Rodeo grounds, 700 W.

Thunder wraps up 2022 Summer League

Lawton Speedway remembers fallen racer Rob Bland

LAWTON ­– Cyril’s Rob Bland was a racer by every definition of the word. He raced the No. 16 Limited Modified at Lawton Speedway and many other tracks around south Oklahoma and north Texas. Bland was known for his kindness, willingness to help other racers, and his contagious laughter.

It’s HOT! Could whoever turned the oven on high and walked away, please show back up and turn it down? It is very hard to believe the temperatures we endured the past few weeks in southwest Oklahoma. The scary part of it all is that a few of our fall sports have already started to practice.

Take Stock in Kids this weekend

LAWTON ­– A “Take Stock in Kids” fundraiser designed to help young people involved with agriculture and livestock will be held 6 p.m. Saturday, July 16 at the Apache Casino Hotel Events Center in Lawton. The evening will feature dinner, live and silent auctions, a live band and dancing.

Track practice begins

Elgin cross country practice starts at 8 a.m., Monday, July 18 at the Elgin track. Practices are mandatory for high school student-athletes (9th-12th), voluntary for middle schoolers. Athletes must have required OKSDE/OSSAA participation forms completed and turn in a current physical.

Duncan Regional Hospital’s Elgin Family Care office, 8148 state Highway 17, will offer free athletic physicals. Parents must schedule an appointment and accompany athletes during the physical examination. Please call (580) 454-2273 to schedule an appointment.
