Lady Tigers win Southwest Shootout on walk-off homer

STERLING – Shelbi Pearson’s walk-off solo homer propelled the Sterling Lady Tigers to a 7-6 win over No. 2 ranked Ripley en route to the Southwest Shootout tournament championship last Saturday. Pearson’s home run came in the bottom of the seventh. It was her second round tripper of the game.

Elgin’s McElhaney wins Cameron Invitational with overwhelming performance

LAWTON – Elgin cross country runner Audrey McElhaney isn’t letting up. The junior won the girls varsity 5K race for the third meet in a row. This time, she was No. 1 at the Cameron Invitational with a time of 19:39, which was 19 seconds better than last year’s performance at Cameron.

Elgin boys win Cameron cross country meet

ELGIN – Three Elgin cross country runners finished in the top 15 as the Owls won the Cameron Invitational last Saturday. Hunter Monostori finished second with a time of 16:47 while teammates Jordan Pierce and Alan Lares crossed the finish line in ninth and 15th, respectively.

Elk hunt applications due by Sept. 16

LAWTON – Applications for Lawton’s elk hunt are now available to the public. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Sept. 16 to the Lawton city clerk’s office, 212 SW Ninth St., or the Parks and Recreation Lakes Division at 23510 state Highway 58, Lawton. The drawing will be held at 4:15 p.m.

How big is ‘Battle of the Wichitas’ rivalry?

ELGIN – The Elgin-Cache football game has been billed “Battle of the Wichitas” for several years, which leads fans from both sides to claim the gridiron matchup as a big rivalry. “It’s going to be a big game with a big crowd,” Elgin head coach Chalmer Wyatt said.

Calumet holds off late Sterling rally to post 11-8 win

STERLING – A four-run rally in the sixth inning fell short Tuesday as Calumet held off Sterling to capture an 11-8 win. Trailing 11-4, Sterling used two singles, two Calumet errors, a fielder’s choice and two batters who were hit by pitches to score four runs.

Blanchard downs Elgin twice in doubleheader

ELGIN – Blanchard won a pair of games Tuesday as the Elgin Lady Owls couldn’t muster enough offense in either contest. In the first game, Blanchard held on to win 8-6 even as Elgin was making a late rally.

Lady Tigers slide past No. 3 Cyril, 4-3

STERLING – Sterling squeezed out a 4-3 win over No. 3 ranked Cyril last Friday despite getting only three hits and committing five errors. “That’s just the way it went,” Sterling head softball coach Marty Curry said. “We were luckier than they were.
