BLACKSBURG, Va. – Oklahoma was back in the Super Regionals for the first time since 2013 when they traveled to Blacksburg to take on the Hokies of Virginia Tech.
The Sooners jumped out to the early lead when Blake Robertson singled into left field to score John Spikerman to give OU a 1-0 lead.
Kendall Pettis and Spikerman singled in a run apiece to give the Sooners a 3-0 lead. Brett Squires and Pettis had a pair of RBI singles to stretch the Oklahoma lead out to five runs.
The Hokies came roaring back in the sixth inning when Carson Jones drove a two-run home run over the fence to make it 5-2.
In the seventh, Jack Hurley hit another two-run homer to cut the lead all the way down to one at 5-4.
In the ninth, the Hokies were down to their last out looking to start a rally when there was a weak fly ball to right field. Spikerman rushed in to make a sliding catch and put an exclamation point on the victory.
That game put OU one win away from their first Men’s College World Series in 12 years.
In game two Virginia Tech took the early lead in the first inning and then added on four runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.
OU responded back in the bottom of the second as Robertson singled up the middle to score a run to make it a four-run game.
Then Jimmy Crooks singled into center field two score two runs and make it a 5-3 ballgame.
In the fourth, Squires drove a home run over the right center field wall to make it a 5-4 game.
The Hokies answered back in the fifth by dragging four runs across the plate to make it a 9-4 game.
Tanner Tredaway homered to left field in the bottom of the fifth made it a 9-5 ballgame.
The Hokies popped back once again for three runs in the sixth inning to stretch the lead back out to a six-run lead.
In the seventh, the Hokies added on one more run.
Oklahoma responded back with three runs in the eighth inning when Pettis, Robertson, and Peyton Graham each had RBIs to make it 13-8.
The Hokies added on another run in the ninth inning to make it 14-8.
Virginia Tech slammed the door in the bottom half of the inning and set up a win-or-go-home game three.
Oklahoma got out to a dream start when Graham and Tredaway each hit home runs in the first inning to make it 2-0.
Virginia Tech fired back in the second inning as Carson DeMartini drove a ball over the right field wall to tie up the game at 2.
Sooners exploded for three runs in the fourth, thanks to the bats of Tredaway, Pettis, and Squires who each drove in runs to make it 5-2.
Robertson and Tredaway did it again in the fifth inning when a pair of doubles plated a pair of runners to make it 7-2.
In the sixth, Pettis continued his hot streak at the plate when he drove a homer over the field wall to stretch the lead by six runs.
Crooks, Jackson Nicklaus, and Wallace Clark each had an RBI in the seventh, eighth and ninth respectively to make it an 11-2 ballgame.
Trevin Michael blew a 1-2 fastball by a Hokie hitter.
The celebration started as the Sooners dogpiled behind the pitcher's mound.
The Sooners advanced to the Men’s College World Series.
OU will kick off play against old Big 12 for and future SEC rival Texas A&M.
The other two teams rounding out the bracket will be the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Texas Longhorns.
