The NCAA has been busy the last few weeks and it was no different this week. The NCAA Division I Council removed the limit on the number of scholarship players teams can sign each year and cleared the road for conferences to eliminate divisions.
It didn’t take the PAC-12 Conference very long to jump on the elimination of division. The PAC-12 announced the conference’s title game would feature the teams with the two highest winning percentages.
You can bet your bottom dollar that other conferences won’t take very long to follow the PAC-12’s lead.
Mlive.com reported that the NCAA also announced that it would change the annual cap limiting schools to signing 25 initial counters (new scholarship players, either recruits or transfers) was lifted for the next two academic years due to a blanket waiver. Teams can now sign as many players as they want but the limit of 85 scholarship players on the roster remains for the FBS.
The FCS maximum remains 63 scholarship players.
The new Name, Image & Likeness rules that the NCAA has implemented are already coming under scrutiny. The news from a meeting from last week was that the NCAA was to begin attempting to crack down on schools’ boosters using NIL payments to land recruits.
One thing about the NCAA, there is never a dull moment.
As always, stay safe and healthy.
