Oklahoma sees scant rainfall for week

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.37 of an inch for the week of Aug. 8-14, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

According to the Aug. 9 U.S. Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 100% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, unchanged from the previous week. Additionally, 99% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought category, unchanged from the previous week.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the lower 80s. Topsoil moisture and subsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly very short to short.

Here’s a look at how crops performed for the week:

Row crops: In the south-central district, much of the soybean crop was rated very poor, while corn condition was only fair.

Corn dough reached 54%, up five points from the previous year but down seven points from normal. Corn dented reached 19%.

Sorghum headed reached 60%, down seven points from the previous year and six points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 30%, up seven points from the previous year and two points from normal.

Soybeans blooming reached 65%, down one point from the previous year and from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 32%, down five points from the previous year but up one point from normal. Peanuts pegging reached 80%, up nine points from the previous year and three points from normal.

Cotton setting bolls reached 60%, down two points from the previous year and seven points from normal.

Hay: In the central district, reporters indicated that hay harvest is providing 50% of average yield at best.

The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 85%, up 11 points from the previous year and four points from normal. The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 15%, down one point from the previous year and six points from normal.

The second cutting of other hay reached 75%, up 11 points from the previous year and 15 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 15%.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 64% poor to very poor.

In the central district, livestock condition is fair to good, with some producers already supplying hay and supplementation. Overall, livestock condition was rated at 80% fair to good.
