GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Oklahoma, riding high after winning the Big XII Tournament, was sent to the Gainesville Regional where they met the Flames of Liberty University.
The Flames got out to an early start scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Sooners answered back in the second inning with four runs to take the lead.
In the fourth inning, OU’s John Spikerman singled into right center to score two runs to make it 6-3 Oklahoma. The Sooners looked like their softball counterpart when the offense exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to make it 14-3.
Adding insult to injury in the seventh inning, OU’s Jimmy Crooks doubled in a pair of runs to stretch the lead to 16-3. Oklahoma wrapped up the blowout win to advance into the winners bracket.
The Sooners next took on the host Florida Gators.
Florida got out to a two-run lead in the bottom of the second inning. Peyton Graham and Blake Roberson both drove home runs in the third inning to tie up the game. Tanner Treadway then scampered home on a passed ball to give OU a 3-2 lead.
Kendell Pettis took home on a passed ball in the fourth inning to double the lead. In the fifth, Crooks stayed hot when he drove a ball over the right-field wall to make it 5-2.
Florida got one run back in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly to cut into the lead. Crooks then got a hold of a ball in the seventh inning for his second home run of the game to make it 8-3 Sooners. Florida got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead to four.
Treadway singled in a run in the eighth inning to add icing on the cake for the Sooner victory as they advanced to the Regional Final.
OU took on the hosts once again needing one win in two tries to advance to the Super Regional.
Scoring once in the fourth and again in the fifth, the Gators pulled ahead 2-0.
Oklahoma tied up the game in the sixth inning, thanks to a pair of singles by Treadway and Crooks.
Florida took the lead back with one run in the seventh, and the added insurance with four runs in the eighth inning.
Oklahoma was back with one more chance to head to a Super Regional in the if-necessary game.
For the third straight game, Florida took the early lead as it was 1-0 after two innings.
In the top of the fifth, Pettis drove a home run over the left-field wall to make it 1-1. The Gators took the lead back at 2-1 in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
After the completion of the sixth inning, the skies opened up and started pouring down rain in Gainesville. Play was suspended at 3:15 p.m. Eastern. After a five-and-a-half-hour rain delay, the Gators scored a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Graham tied up the game in the top of the eighth with a two-run home run. Wallace Clark and Jackson Nicklaus added on insurance for the Sooners with a 5-3 lead. Florida got one back with a solo shot in the ninth inning, but Oklahoma was able to slam the door and take the victory.
Oklahoma advances to their first Super Regional since 2013, The Sooners are just two wins away from their first CWS Appearance since 2010.
Oklahoma will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies.
