54 percent of state experiencing moderate to exceptional drought

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.42 of an inch for the week of May 9-15, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

According to the May 10 U.S. Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 60% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 17 points from the previous week. Additionally, 54% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought category, down 11 points from the previous week.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the upper 70s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly adequate to short.

Here’s a look at crop status for the week of May 9-15:

Small grains: Winter wheat headed reached 78%, down 11 points from the previous year and 13 points from normal.

Canola blooming reached 78%, down one point from the previous year. Canola coloring reached 32%, down 12 points from the previous year and seven points from normal.

Rye headed reached 64%, down 25 points from the previous year and 22 points from normal.

Oats jointing reached 68%, up seven points from the previous year but down three points from normal. Oats headed reached 25%, down 12 points from the previous year and 10 points from normal.

Row crops: Corn planted reached 43%, down 11 points from the previous year and 19 points from normal. Corn emerged reached 25%, down four points from the previous year and 18 points from normal.

Sorghum planted reached 7%, down 11 points from the previous year and 13 points from normal.

Soybeans planted reached 24%, up one point from the previous year but down two points from normal.

Peanuts planted reached 13%, down 15 points from the previous year and 17 points from normal.

Cotton planted reached 20%, down two points from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 5%, down 11 points from the previous year.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 66% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 85% good to fair.
