Elgin sets date for vote to fill vacant council seat

ELGIN – Later this year, Elgin voters will choose someone to fill the vacancy on the Elgin City Council.

The council voted April 1 to schedule a nonpartisan special election to fill the Ward 2 seat on the council, formerly held by Eric Bradford. Bradford resigned from the council in January, citing personal problems, at about the same time he resigned his job at Elgin Public Schools.

The filing period for candidates interested in replacing Bradford on the council will run from 8 a.m. April 20 until 5 p.m. April 22. The election to fill Bradford’s seat will be June 28, the same date as the upcoming primary election.

“That’s the nearest election that we can get on with proper notice,” said Elgin Mayor JJ Francais. “There’ll be an election between now and then, but not enough time to get on.”

Candidates must be registered to vote in Elgin and must have lived in Ward 2 for at least six months before filing their declaration of candidacy. However, the election is open to all Elgin residents who are registered to vote.
