Lady Owls swim to second place in Area Championships

LAWTON — Elgin’s girls swim team finished in the runner-up position at the Area Championships held last Friday at Cameron University. The team’s performance was highlighted by Ellie Stevenson’s record-breaking performance and second-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley.

Lady Tigers win Comanche County Tournament

LAWTON — The Lady Tigers exacted some revenge against Chattanooga during the Comanche County Tournament last week with a narrow 41-39 win. Earlier in the season, Chattanooga swept past Sterling 55-39. Chattanooga is ranked No. 19 in Class B.

Late scoring spurt pushes Tigers to title game win

LAWTON — Sterling used a late scoring spurt to defeat Big Pasture 42-41 last Saturday and win the Comanche County Tournament for the first time in six years. The Tigers have won the Comanche County tourney two other times in 2017 and 1976. Sterling is now 14-7 with the three tournament wins.

Elgin defeats Byng to finish third at tourney

PURCELL — Elgin earned third place at last week’s Purcell Tournament with two wins, including a 52-38 win over Byng. The two tournament wins leave Elgin with a 9-7 record heading into Friday’s game at Tuttle.

School board approves new contract for Meraz

ELGIN — Elgin’s Board of Education voted to approve a new contract for Superintendent Nate Meraz, who is finishing his eighth year in that position. The contract approval came during the Jan. 12 school board meeting.

Lawton man killed in wreck near Fletcher

LAWTON — A Lawton man was killed in a one-vehicle wreck Thursday morning near Fletcher. Matthew Muirhead was eastbound on Interstate 44, less than a mile east of Fletcher, when he experienced a medical incident, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.

Cyril man held without bond in 4-year-old’s murder; remains identified

CADDO COUNTY — The man police say is responsible for killing a 4-year-old Cyril girl is being held in the Caddo County jail without bond. A gag order has been issued on his case, preventing the release of court documents and prohibiting investigators from speaking to the press regarding the case.

Funeral services set for Athena Brownfield

CYRIL — The remains of a small child discovered by Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents Tuesday outside the town of Rush Springs in rural Grady County are believed to be those of missing Cyril 4-year-old Athena Brownfield.
