Having yet to recover from the challenges presented by the pandemic, the Oklahoma Blood Institute has expanded hours at all donation centers, the organization announced.
Nationally, blood supply has dipped below half what is needed, creating an immediate need for blood donors.
In Oklahoma, “Over the last several weeks donation numbers have dipped, which have left us struggling to keep stock levels necessary to protect our community,” said Dr. John Armitage, president and CEO of Oklahoma Blood Institute. We need donors to respond immediately to help friends and neighbors using blood.”
Hours for the donation centers are weekdays 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday: 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday: 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
Patients across the state rely on blood products to fight cancer, survive trauma and heal after childbirth. Each dlood donation takes about an hour and can save up to three lives.
Donors can find locations to donate at obi.org or by calling (877) 340-8777.
In related news, OBI’s Greater Good program has selected Elgin Animal Shelter to receive $10 for every successful blood draw if they go 10% over the blood draw goal during the Saturday, April 23 blood drive. The drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Just 4 K-9’s & Kitty 2, 1302 NW 47th St. in Lawton.
“Every blood donation helps saves lives and at this event, and there’s the added bonus of helping our local four-legged friends as well,” said Elgin Animal Welfare Coordinator Lisa Carroll.
