More than half of state seeing moderate to exceptional drought

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.46 of an inch the week of May 16-22, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The May 17 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 60% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, similar to the previous week. Additionally, 54% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought category, also similar to the previous week.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the lower 70s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly adequate to short.

Here’s a look at crop status for the week:

Small grains: Winter wheat headed reached 95%, down two points from the previous year and one point from normal.

Canola blooming reached 88%, down five points from the previous year. Canola coloring reached 42%, down seven points from the previous year and 10 points from normal.

Rye headed reached 85%, down 10 points from the previous year.

Oats jointing reached 76%, down one point from the previous year and two points from normal. Oats headed reached 45%, down three points from the previous year and two points from normal.

Row crops: Corn planted reached 71%, up 12 points from the previous year but down one point from normal. Corn emerged reached 54%, up three points from the previous year but down four points from normal.

Sorghum planted reached 20%, down one point from the previous year and four points from normal.

Soybeans planted reached 30%, up four points from the previous year but down five points from normal. Soybeans emerged reached 9%.

Peanuts planted reached 26%, down eight points from the previous year and 17 points from normal.

Cotton planted reached 26%, up two points from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 18%, down three points from the previous year and 16 points from normal. The first cutting of other hay reached 11%, down four points from the previous year and nine points from normal.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 62% fair to good. Livestock condition was rated at 89% good to fair.
