LAWTON – Comanche County has extended its burn ban again.
The Board of Comanche County Commissioners voted 3-0 Monday to continue the ban on outdoor burning for another seven days. The ban typically lasts for two weeks, but the commissioners decided to extend it for one week and revisit the issue May 2.
“Talking to Clint (Langford, the county’s emergency management director), I’ll make a motion that we extend it for seven days and then look at it at next Monday’s meeting to see if it’s greened up enough to allow us to remove it,” said Commission Chairman Alvin Cargill.
The ban has been in place since Dec. 30, except for a brief period in late February when the ban was allowed to expire because county officials expected cold, wet weather toward the end of that week. But drier weather soon returned, prompting the county to reinstate the ban in early March.
Under the ban, people are prohibited from setting fire to forest land or any other type of wild land. People are also barred from starting campfires, starting bonfires or burning trash or other materials that could start a grass fire.
