Lady Owls need confidence, learning new system as basketball season looms

ELGIN – Confidence will play a critical role in the success level Elgin’s girls’ basketball team enjoys this season, according to new head coach Brett Sanders.

ELGIN – Elgin baseball player Jake Thomas signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play for Seminole State College next season. Thomas was surrounded by teammates, coaches and family members during the signing.

Elgin football team wins 5A academic state championship

ELGIN – Elgin’s varsity football team has been crowned Class 5A state academic champions for 2022. Elgin’s 66-member team earned a 3.54 grade point average and will receive a trophy before the state championship game Saturday at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

Lady Tigers sweep past Central High 55-22 for third straight win

STERLING – Emma Nunley tallied a game-high 22 points as the Sterling Lady Tigers breezed to a 55-22 win over the Central High Bronchos Tuesday night. Sterling, 4-1, won its third consecutive game in relatively easy fashion jumping out to a 15-8 first-period lead.

Two injured in wreck near Fort Cobb

An Elgin teenager was injured in a one-vehicle accident early Monday morning near Fort Cobb. Jesse Hefley, 18, was driving east on Caddo County Road 1325 in a 2016 Mazda 3, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.

Profile reports fail to convey entire story, school chief says

ELGIN – School Superintendent Nate Meraz believes there’s a broader story behind district statistics than meets the eye. In November, Elgin’s Board of Education accepted reports on school dropout and remediation classes for college freshmen. The reports showed Elgin had a 7.

Guthrie ends Elgin season with 17-0 playoff win

ELGIN — A strong running game pushed the Guthrie Bluejays to a 17-0 win over the Elgin Owls Friday night in a first-round Class 5A playoff game. Elgin, which finishes the season 8-3, struggled offensively while the Guthrie rushing attack punished Elgin defenders for most of the game.

Late surge propels Elgin past MacArthur, 20-13

LAWTON — Elgin’s offense held Thursday night thanks in large part to sophomore quarterback Tres Lorah, who ran for a touchdown and threw the game-winning pass, propelling the Owls to victory over Lawton MacArthur and grabbing a spot in the Class 5A playoffs.
