Owls win 5A-3 district dual championship

ELGIN — Elgin’s top-ranked mat team claimed the Class 5A-3 dual title with wins over No. 2 El Reno, Southeast and Woodward, which puts the Owls into the dual state meet next month. However, the title didn’t come without controversy.  When the Owls wrestled El Reno on Jan.

Elgin defeats Byng to finish third at tourney

PURCELL — Elgin earned third place at last week’s Purcell Tournament with two wins, including a 52-38 win over Byng. The two tournament wins leave Elgin with a 9-7 record heading into Friday’s game at Tuttle.

Elgin strings together wins against Elk City, Clinton

ELGIN — For the first time this season Elgin put together consecutive wins with victories over Western Conference opponents Elk City and Clinton. Elgin, 7-6, defeated Elk City 58-48 on Jan. 13 and came back four days later to down Clinton 56-25.

Lady Owls dominate Clinton 60-30

ELGIN – Elgin’s Lady Owls dominated Clinton Tuesday night while earning a 60-30 win over their Western Conference opponent. The Lady Owls jumped out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter and improved that advantage to 36-27 at halftime.

Elgin slips past rival El Reno to win mat tourney

MIDWEST CITY — Elgin crowned two champions and walked away with the team title last Saturday at the Carl Albert Malcolm Wade Invitational. As a team, Elgin finished with 205 points with El Reno in second with 199.5 and Lawton MacArthur in third with 198. El Reno is ranked No.

The Carolina chickadee is a fairly common bird and is easily attracted to backyard feeders. Since I featured the tufted titmouse last week, I thought it best to feature the bird which is often seen along with it.

Elgin girls, boys lose close matchups to Anadarko

ELGIN — Poor three-point and free throw shooting cost the Elgin Tuesday night as the No. 8-ranked Anadarko Warriors squeezed past the Lady Owls 37-34. “It was a great game. We played well but we didn’t shoot well,” Elgin head coach Brett Sanders said.

Jackson wins mat title, Owls finish third as team

ELGIN — Elgin’s Hunter Jackson defeated one of the state’s top wrestlers last Saturday as he won the 113-pound title at the Cushing Invitational. Jackson also has won tournament titles at Blanchard and Weatherford. He defeated Louden Wolfe 3-0 in the finals of the Cushing tournament.

Five Owls named to Oklahoman All-State gridiron team

ELGIN — Five Elgin varsity football players were named honorable mention to The Oklahoman newspaper’s All-State team. The “deserving” players were running back Matt Lund, linemen Keith Ferguson and Jace Williams and linebackers Colyn Donnelly and Ritson Meyer. All five will return to the 2023 team.
