Meet Maribell   Maribell is seeking a comfortable home where she can spend her golden years. This older female is a calm, medium-sized, mixed breed brindle canine. She enjoys quietly lounging in the air-conditioned kennel area, keeps her space clean and seems to be housebroken.

School districts predict increased enrollment

ELGIN – Elgin Public Schools will likely experience an increase in enrollment as new military families move into the district, Superintendent Nathaniel Meraz said. “Right now, we are full and at capacity, but that doesn’t matter. Military families can choose where they want to go,” he said.

Track practice begins

Elgin cross country practice starts at 8 a.m., Monday, July 18 at the Elgin track. Practices are mandatory for high school student-athletes (9th-12th), voluntary for middle schoolers. Athletes must have required OKSDE/OSSAA participation forms completed and turn in a current physical.

Vanderpool makes a splash

EDMOND – Elgin’s swim teams continue to make waves in high swimming. The Owls have only had a swim team for a few years, but continue to rack up honors. Vivian Vanderpool has earned the honor of becoming Elgin High School’s first all-state swimmer. At 6:30 p.m.

Elgin's sales tax receipts up slightly in June

ELGIN – Elgin showed a slight increase in sales tax revenue received in June even with the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The city received $154,841 compared to the same time period a year ago with $153,014, which is a 1% increase.

Kirk’s moving closer to stationing ambulance in Elgin

ELGIN – The Lawton-based ambulance service Kirk’s EMS may have an ambulance stationed in Elgin by next month. The licensure is already in place, but Kirk’s still has some loose ends to tie up before it can set up shop in Elgin, EMS Director Bruce Crowell said Wednesday.
Elgin will soon have a new eating establishment once doors open on DWhites restaurant. Restaurateur Demetrius White plans to offer home cooking the way his grandmother taught him. ELGIN - Demetrius White plans to give Elgin and surrounding communities home cooking away from home when his DWhite’s restaurant opens later this month.

Elgin’s Tucker pursuing his passion through rodeos

CHICKASHA – Garrett Tucker was “goofing off” when he tried his hand at bronc riding 10 years ago, but now he’s riding those wild horses almost every weekend. That was the case June 24-25 as Tucker competed in the 83rd Chickasha Open Rodeo where he finished third in the bronc riding and earned $260.

OKLAHOMA CITY – A recent Elgin graduate is one of 100 outstanding seniors from across the state to be recognized by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence during the organization’s annual Academic Awards Banquet in Oklahoma City.

Elgin Animal Shelter is asking for donations to help provide for the animals. Currently the animals need: Purina Dog/Cat Chow/Puppy/Kitten Chow. Dog treats. Kong/tough toys. Stainless steel food/water bowls. Non-clumping clay cat litter. Litter pans. Wire- or hard-sided crates.
