Randy's Natural World

Ruby-throated hummingbirds and late-summer feeding   At this time of summer, many folks are wondering when they should stop feeding hummingbirds. And the answer isn’t simple. Sometimes hummingbirds may be gone by mid-September, but a few years ago, we had some hanging around well into October.

Support needed for Elgin Animal Shelter

Elgin Animal Shelter is seeking donations to help provide for the animals. Currently the animals need: • Purina Dog/Cat/Puppy/Kitten Chow. • Dog treats. • Kong/tough toys. • Stainless steel food/water bowls. • Non-clumping clay cat litter. • Litter pans. • Wire- or hard-sided crates.

Randy’s Natural World:The truth about kissing bugs

The name “kissing bug” often strikes fear in people. And, in certain parts of the world, that is understandable. However, in the United States, there’s really no need to spend too much time worrying about these insects. It would be like worrying about quicksand. Remember quicksand?

Pet of The Week

Blu is a young adult lab mix who is super friendly with humans of all ages. He is a medium-sized neutered canine with a moderate energy level and a really big heart. He loves to play and would make a great family pet. He is current on vaccinations and ready to go on plenty of new adventures!
Photo by Randy Mitchell A juvenile black-bellied plover rinses off a worm it has pulled from the mud. I snapped this photo in September 2019 near a large lake. An adult in the fall will look similar to this, but with a lighter (mostly white) belly and breast, and the markings on the back and wings will be less crisp.

Randy's Natural World: Their bellies aren't always black

The black-bellied plover passes through Oklahoma during fall and spring migration, the former of which is already underway. It is a shorebird, similar in shape to a “shorebird” that is a permanent resident in southwest Oklahoma called a killdeer.

Randy's Natural World: Big grasshopper isn’t that big of a pest

You may have seen this week’s featured creature quite a bit lately. Hippiscus ocelote is a hefty grasshopper with a tough look. However, its common name, wrinkled grasshopper, isn’t very tough at all.
