Crossroads Baptist to present seminar on human trafficking

Crossroads Baptist Church in Elgin is offering a two-day seminar on modern parenting this weekend. The seminar, “Parenting Today in an Oversexualized World,” will run from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Saturday and from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church, 11423 NE 75th St. in Elgin. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and a free lunch will be provided.

The seminar is presented by The Red Cord, a Lawton-based organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking. Topics will include “Human Trafficking 101,” “Apps, Gaming, Sexting and Internet Safety” and “How to Report Internet Crimes and Human Trafficking.”

Registration is available at The Red Cord’s Facebook page or at https://crossroadselgin.breezechms.com/form/b232de. Seating is limited to 200 people. Both events are free of charge, but donations are welcome. Childcare will be available on Saturday only for $10 per child.

Saturday’s class will give parents the tools they need to raise their children in the modern world, said Red Cord President Ahsha Morin. “It’s really focused to help educate parents but also empower them to have the knowledge to be able to make some changes within their household or with their kids to help keep them safe, ultimately,” she said.

Sunday’s class, which is designed for middle school and high school students, will consist of a four-part video series on human trafficking, how to protect yourself online and how to report predators. “It’s just a good time for the kids to understand that the part that they play in keeping themselves and their friends safe,” Morin said. She said parents are welcome to attend the Sunday program, titled “Unlock Freedom,” with their children.
