Apache Fair continues through Saturday

APACHE – The Nancy Goodman Tate Memorial Horse Show, a pet show, a pie auction and other events are all part of the mix for the annual Apache Fair.

Organizers anticipate a strong turnout for the fair, which began Thursday and runs through Saturday, said Apache Fair Board President Jimmy Patterson.

“We expect to have quite a few people down here, enjoying the weather,” he said.

Here’s a list of this year’s events, starting with today’s lineup, according to the Aug. 11 edition of The Apache News:

• Today: 9 a.m.: Judging of Depts. D, F, G and H.

10 a.m.: Old-time threshing machine demonstration by John Jones and the Poor Boys Antique Tractor Club.

6 p.m.: Sheep and goat entries, followed by judging at 7 p.m.

7 p.m.: Coloring contest entries.

8:30 p.m.: Lions Gymnastics.

8:30 p.m.: Entertainment by the Billy Nunn Band.

• Saturday: 8 a.m.: Nancy Tate Goodman Memorial Horse Show at Apache Rodeo Arena.

11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.: Registration for the Caffeine and Chrome car show begins. Voting for the car show will start at 3 p.m., with an awards presentation at 4:30 p.m. and the parade line-up at 5:30 p.m.

The registration fee for the car show is $20. Proceeds will go the Apache Historical Society for repairing the Apache Museum.

3:30 p.m.; Entries open for the Children’s Pet Show, with the show set to begin at 4 p.m.

Pet show classes include cat, dog, water/reptile/fowl, unusual pets, most talented pet and best-dressed pet. No late entries allowed.

6 p.m.: Parade, with the theme “Small Town Roots.” Entries must line up at City Park by 5:30 p.m.

Float prizes are $200 for first place, $150 for second, $100 for third and $50 for fourth.

The parade will include a biggest and tallest hat contest, with a $100 prize for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third.

All bike riders in the parade will receive $1. The best-decorated bike will win $1; second place will win $10, and third takes home $5.

7 p.m.: Bring your pies, fried pies and cobblers to the Apache Fairgrounds Stage area for the pie auction. The auction, sponsored by the Apache Masonic Lodge, will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the pie auction will go to the Historical Society for work on the museum.

8:30 p.m.: Entertainment by the Grissleheads.
