ENID — Top-ranked Elgin claimed the Class 5A Dual State championship Saturday night with a convincing 40-27 over No. 2 Coweta.

Earlier in the day, Elgin defeated No. 5 Collinsville 48-21 in the semifinal round. On Friday, Elgin posted its first win in the quarterfinals with a dominating victory over Pryor, 48-18.

Winners of the eight Class 5A districts advanced to Dual State. Elgin was 9-1 in duals this season heading into the state tournament. Coweta was 16-1 in dual action and Collinsville’s record was 6-2.

With one state crown in its hands, Elgin will turn their attention to the Class 5A West regional tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Carl Albert High School. Teams competing in the regional are Altus, Ardmore, Bishop McGuinness, Carl Albert, Del City, Duncan, Durant, Eisenhower, Elgin, El Reno, Guthrie, John Marshall, Lawton MacArthur, Noble, Santa Fe South and Southeast.
