ELGIN — Elgin’s varsity wrestlers are healthy and ready for action today, when they take on Pryor in the first round of the Class 5A Dual State Tournament in Enid.
“We’ve been training well, and we’re just anxious to get there,” head coach Cody Rowell said.
The winner of each district has advanced to the dual state tournament, which pits No. 1 Elgin against No. 8 seed Pryor. If Elgin defeats Pryor on Friday, the Owls will face the winner of the Collinsville-Duncan dual at 2 p.m. Saturday. The entire event is being held at Enid’s Stride Bank Center.
“We’re going to put our best lineup together and be ready to go,” Rowell said. “We may bump some weights around that you wouldn’t see in a regular tournament setting.”
The first order of business, however, will be to defeat Pryor (7-5), which had four dual losses to teams ranked in Class 5A’s top 20.
“It’s going to be tight,” Rowell said. “Every match matters, and we’re not looking past anyone. I think if they (Owls) go out and do what they’re supposed to, we could run away. As a team, this sets heavy on our kids. We’re ready to get after it.”
Elgin will be led by Hunter Jackson, who is ranked No. 1 in Oklahoma at 113 pounds; freshman Ritson Meyer, No. 1 at 190 pounds; and Colyn Donnelly, who is No. 3 at 215 pounds.
Elgin’s only dual loss occurred against Marlow, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A.
